Topsoil preparation and conditioning

Great lawns start below the surface

At Jade Blade Hydroseeding, we understand that great results begin below the surface. Proper soil preparation is one of the most important steps in achieving healthy, even grass growth.

We use professional soil conditioning equipment, commonly known as a Rotar Rake, Harley Rake, or soil conditioner, to prepare each site with precision. This process breaks up compacted soil, removes rocks and debris, and levels the ground to create a clean, consistent surface.

By conditioning the soil before hydroseeding, we improve seed-to-soil contact, promote even germination, and help establish stronger root systems. The result is a healthier lawn that grows in more evenly and performs better over time.

Whether the project is residential, commercial, or focused on erosion control, proper preparation ensures the hydroseeding process delivers the best possible outcome.

FAQ

Topsoil Preparation & Conditioning questions

How much topsoil do I need for a new lawn?

At least 4 inches, levelled and raked. If you have less, we’ll tell you when we look at your yard.

What is a power rake?

A machine attachment with a rotating, toothed drum that breaks up clods, pulls rocks and debris aside and levels the surface in one pass.

Can you grade my yard so water drains away from my house?

Yes. We shape the grade so water runs away from your foundation. Major regrading may need extra material, which we’ll flag when we look at the site.

Can you prep and seed my yard?

Yes. Book topsoil preparation and hydroseeding together and we’ll take care of both.

What if my soil is poor?

We can recommend soil amendments, such as fertilizer and organic material, to improve it before seeding.
